Further, they are very convincing about their line of work, and they speak with an authority that tolerates very little argument. So, how can you verify any information about them? This is very difficult. I have looked at bank and organization websites, particularly if the partner is a bank official, but I always draw a blank. These websites seem to be so full of information, you forget what you are looking for in the first place! I also check the Google spam pages and they can be helpful. If you find your ‘partner’ listed as a scam artist, there are no more decisions to be made. Forget about the deal. Other than getting specific information about themselves, which they are not about to give you, there is really nothing you can do except to believe that they are who they say they are. Now, returning to our saga of James, PW and Clydesdale. Mr PC had given James a contact at the Financial Services Authority. Mr. X called James as soon as he received the three documents and informed us in order for us to access the money, we were going to have to find £110,000 British Pounds! This was the sum of money necessary to engage Financial Services in clearing the money for the bank. Finally, it dawned on us - we were never going to see one penny of any of the money that PW had sent, because there was no money. It was all one big, giant, enormous scam - probably perpetrated on many other people who had opened themselves to the opportunity and were stupid enough, like we were, to be fooled. A day later, Mr. PC phoned and asked us where the £110,000 was, and James let him know, in no uncertain terms, that we knew about the scam. Immediately he hung up and we never heard from him or anyone else again. We lost $5,300. in this adventure that we could ill-afford to lose. Presumably this was split among the small coterie of scammers. FINAL WARNING #10: NEVER FORWARD ANY PERSONAL INFORMATION TO ANYONE. The above information includes methods of identification, e,g, a copy of the information page of your passport; driver’s licenses; bank account numbers and information; credit card numbers and any other material useful for the scammers. Passport and driver’s license details can prompt identity theft which nobody wants. Credit card details are encouragement for purchases to be run up to the maximum on your credit card. Bank account numbers - that’s asking for trouble. Your account could be compromised at any time. One final warning in this sad, sad state of affairs. James has never given up trying. He firmly believes one day his ship will come in and he will be there waiting. With this attitude comes all the problems that an addiction creates in a family and the addict will never be swayed. As I’ve said before, this is an insidious business; please, dear readers, keep away from all things scam.

2) Travellers Cheques

These are the traditional way of carrying money abroad. When you buy the cheques, which can be in Sterling, Euros or US Dollars, you have to sign the stub of each cheque in the presence of the teller. Once abroad, you can convert the cheques into local currency by signing the other half of the cheque at a currency exchange, where the teller will compare the two signatures and also inspect your passport.

This system is more secure than cash as each cheque is uniquely numbered, so if a cheque goes missing it can be quickly cancelled and replaced by the cheque issuer. There is a drawback in that you have to cash the cheques at a currency exchange, and you might not find one offering a good exchange rate.

3) Credit Cards

Credit cards are accepted virtually the world over, and may seem a good way of paying your way while abroad. As well as using them for shopping, they can be used to pay restaurant bills and even to withdraw cash. Before choosing this as your travel money option though, check your card’s small print to see what interest rate is charged on overseas use - it will probably be higher than the standard rate of your card, and you’ll probably have to pay exchange charges too.

4) Cash Machines

There are now several international cash machine networks in operation, for example the Cirrus network, and it’s likely that your cash card can be used internationally, especially in Europe and the USA. This is a good way of financing your holiday spending, as you can draw out what you need while keeping the rest of your money safe in your normal bank account. The downside is that you may have to pay a fee for each withdrawal, and the exchange rate you’re charged may not be the best available.

5) Prepaid Cards

These are a relatively new kind of plastic card, which are used in much the same way as credit or debit cards, with the big difference that you have to ‘load’ the card with funds before you can spend with it. They are a secure way of carrying money, as the card is replaceable if lost, and as it can only be used in conjunction with a PIN number then even if stolen it’s difficult for a thief to make use of it. There will, however, still be exchange commissions payable when you use the card, and also usually a flat fee for cash withdrawals.

The main thing to bear in mind with travel money is that while each of the above options is useful, not all are suitable for use everywhere in the world. The best advice is not to rely on a single kind of travel money, but to take a sensible mixture of cash, local currency, and plastic or cheques, to make sure you can always get local currency when you need it. Western Union is a legitimate company, with a legitimate service that is almost entirely utilized by legitimate people and businesses. There is no way you can lose money through Western Union, so long as the person you are sending money to is a known, trusted individual. However, certain people have been exploiting Western Union’s services to trick unknowing victims in to wiring money for goods and services that are poorly rendered, if received at all.             There are many different scams using Western Union as a medium to get money from the victim to the scammer. The Better Business Bureau’s Tom Joyce recently published a report about a relatively old scam that has been seeing more and more activity: The Lottery Scam. In this setup, the victim is informed that they have won some sort of a prize. For example, lottery winnings. A check may come with these letters for a large sum of money. The receiver will typically be asked to send back a relatively small portion of it via Western Union wire transfer; $300 from a $5000 check, for example. However, the check is a forgery.             The most important thing to remember is never, under any circumstances, send money via Western Union to companies that you do not know. So long as you exercise caution, awareness and skepticism when dealing with anyone asking for a Western Union or any other person-to-person wire transfer of money, you will not fall victim to these scams.
